I called an ATI contact at WWDC to ask if the new 'ATI Radeon X1900 XT Graphics Upgrade Kit' at the Apple store (kit priced at $499, est. 3-5 weeks to ship) would work in a PCI-Express based G5 Tower.

Konica minolta drivers for mac. I was wondering if anyone has thoughts about video card compatibility in the Power Mac successor ('Mac Pro'). Epson driver for mac. I guess anyone knows about the current state of video card availability/pricing for the Mac platform, so let's skip that part and think about the future:
Radeon X1900 Drivers
- Will 'Mac Pro' video cards still need a Mac specific ROM? (The endian problem is gone with the Intel Macs, but are there other differences?)
- Will they be able to run in both PPC and Intel PCIe Macs? (Say if an Intel Mac could use any 'normal' PC video card, I imagine it will not run in a PPC Mac - with the exception of certain 'hybrid' cards like a Radeon 9600 XT model for example).
Background info: I'm running a quad G5 and think it's kinda sad that the GeForce 7800 GT is the best (*) officially available model (and only as CTO option to boot).
Apart from any ethical issues one might have, flashed GeForce 7800 GTX cards are nice, but difficult to obtain outside the US. And there is no high-end nor PCIe card available from ATI whatsoever. -- View image here: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif --
So if the 'Mac Pro' machines will kick ass enough, I'd be quite ready to sell my quad G5 and buy a 'Mac Pro' (possibly even non-quad-core). That would open the world of windows games, which I'd appreciate. Even more so if I could pop in almost any video card I like. Ok, it probably would have to be based on an existing model so that an existing (and hopefully unified) driver will work on the Mac OS X side.
Cheers, Oliver
(*) let's say for games with bang/buck in mind, so e.g. not including the professional Quadro FX 4500 card.
Note: I asked this question in the 'Mac Pro next Tuesday?' thread, but thought it might be better to create a separate thread .
