Iomega got its name dragged through the muck for producing some poor products, the worst being the Zip 100 back in the 1990s and the ScreenPlay in 2006. Over the past few years, Iomega products have improved, and the eGo Portable Hard Drive Mac Edition (500GB) ($150 list) should help to put the company back on the map. The newest in its eGo line is fast, stylish, and compatible with a wide variety of Macs. And it's fast—oh, did I mention that already? It's a very good choice for the owner of an older Mac who needs to back up all those files (finally), or the new Mac owner who wants to start off on the right foot.

The eGo Mac Edition is now slimmer than the 'hip flask'–style Iomega eGo drive, which was introduced in 2007. It has a new automotive-style glossy paint job—the 500GB version I tested comes in Ruby Red; there's also a Midnight Blue 320GB version for $110, and Alpine White 250GB model for $100. The glossy paint job can get smudged easily with fingerprints, so keep a wiping cloth handy. The drive is a compact 0.5 by 3.5 by 5.6 inches (HWD). Its edges are more beveled than square, so it will match MacBook Pro styling. The original eGo model had unprotected USB or FireWire 400 ports, while the new model has three ports protected by an overhang: USB, FireWire 400, and FireWire 800. Next to the FireWire 400 port is a drive-access LED that's just a bit too bright when blinking during operation. At least you can point the light away from you so it's less bothersome. Like the previous eGo drives, the eGo Mac Edition is engineered to survive a 51-inch drop, so you needn't worry about tossing it around in your commute bag.
Iomega Drivers Downloads Zip 100
The eGo Mac Edition is totally bus-powered, drawing its power from your computer through the connecting cable, so it doesn't need an external power supply. (It comes with USB, FireWire 800, and FireWire 800 to 400 cables.) It came up quickly when plugged into our Apple MacBook Pro test bed, on either the drive's FireWire or USB ports. The drive was particularly speedy, taking only 40 seconds to copy our 1.2GB test folder over USB 2.0. What's more amazing is that the drive took only 23 seconds to transfer the same file over FireWire 800 and 24 seconds over FireWire 400. This is faster than the full-size external Western Digital My Book Studio II (our current Editors' Choice for Mac drives), and faster than any of the other pocket-size portable drives like the WD My Passport Studio and the Seagate FreeAgent Go.
You can reformat the drive for Windows use, but the drive comes out of the box formatted with the HFS+ file system, so it works natively with Macs. Disappointingly, you have to register on Iomega's Web site (iomega/com/protect) to download the 'included' software—the backup software utilities don't come on the drive itself. That frees up space if all you're doing is setting the drive up as a Time Machine backup point, but if you do need the software you have to actually read the directions to find the Web site for Iomega's bundled software. Once you enter your serial number and sign up, you can download a six-month subscription to McAfee VirusScan Plus (Windows only), Iomega QuikProtect (a file-based backup that runs continuously, so far for Windows only, but a Mac version is promised), EMC Retrospect (for both Windows and the Mac), and MozyHome online backup (2GB free). I would've preferred that these programs had come on the hard drive, since you may not be online when you need to back up your MacBook out in the field (or just after purchasing the drive). It's a big ding on an otherwise great hard drive. On the other hand, the version of Retrospect Express (6.1) that comes with the eGo is compatible with Mac OS X back to 10.1. This is great for people with legacy Macs who really should be backing up memories they can't afford to lose.
Overall, the Iomega eGo Mac Edition is an excellent backup solution for the mobile Mac user. It's faster than speedy external drives that you have to plug into a power adapter, and it's compact enough to fit in any commute or travel bag. Its list price is already decent, but judging by the way hard drive prices have fallen in the past year, it should be available soon for much less than its $150 list price. The nice price, triple interfaces, rugged construction, attractive case, capacious storage, and speedy performance mean that the Iomega eGo is now our Editors' Choice for portable hard drives for the Mac, dethroning the Western Digital My Book Passport Studio.
